Freesound is the internet’s shared recording studio: more than half a million sounds uploaded by field recordists, foley artists and synth tinkerers, searchable by tag, duration, license and even similarity. Any project that makes a noise - a game, a podcast, an app with UI feedback - can source its entire audio layer here.
Where it shines
- Raw material at scale. Need “wooden door creak, interior, night”? It exists, in six versions, with the original WAV.
- License filters built in. Search can be restricted to CC0 only, which removes attribution bookkeeping for commercial work.
- An API for pipelines. The Freesound API lets you pull sounds programmatically - useful when an AI-generated game needs SFX matched to its events.
Where it falls short
- Quality varies wildly; the same keyword returns broadcast-grade recordings and phone-mic takes side by side.
- Downloads require a free account, and some sounds are CC-BY, so credits must ship with your product.

Verdict
The default answer to “where do I get sound effects?”. Combine the CC0 filter with the API and it becomes an actual production pipeline, not just a library.
